About Ewan's Websites

My name is Ewan Thompson, and I'm an engineer based in Inglewood, Perth.
Working across robotics, software and web development for 15+ years, I've picked up a thing or two along the way. I now work as a sole trader, providing various services to numerous clients on a freelance basis, and building up Ewan's Websites.
I started this business to focus solely on small businesses. I'm a local small business owner and I live where you live. I'm all about building real connections and long-term relationships with other local small business owners.

But Why?

It's story time so get comfortable!
In early 2025, I'd just wrapped up a contract at one of those three-letter mining giants. Feeling a bit over the corporate grind, I dusted off my freelancing cap that had been stashed away for a few years, and set about finding clients.
I found that the web design market was definitely well filled — it seemed everyone and their aunt was making websites for people nowadays!
But I also found a lot of people who design websites seemed to be doing some of the same things:
  • Charging a large, one-off price to design a website.
  • Not offering any support after the website is designed.
  • Not hosting the website, or if they do, charging extra for it.
  • Having either design or technical chops instead of both.
  • Using Wix, Squarespace or another website builder (yeuck!).
  • Using WordPress with all the performance and security issues it brings.
  • ... this list could get really long but you get the point.
I wanted to do it a bit differently and try and fill some of those gaps, rather than just another re-hash of what everyone else was offering.
I spoke to a couple of small business owners I knew, and one of the common themes that came out was the cost. Paying $3,000-8,000 to get a website built might be "worth it", but it's a pretty huge outlay for any small business to make!
I went looking online and read about a bloke in America who offered web design on more of a "subscription model". As much as everything becoming subscription based these days sucks, it made a lot of sense for websites — a small business might not be able to fork out a few thousand dollars, but maybe they could afford a lower monthly cost instead?
And so Ewan's Websites was born. I wanted to provide my experience in an affordable package, focusing exclusively on small businesses who are most in need of getting online and in front of customers they're missing out on.
Thanks to Mayu Bala for the shot of the iconic Blue Boat House in the background — if that doesn't make you think of Perth, then I don't know what will!
